As America becomes increasingly heated, all of us are forced to decide where we stand on certain issues, issues such as immigration. One side says we need to take care of our own poor before we can take care of the needs of others. Still, the other side says that the American values belong to everybody who comes here.
Regardless of which side you believe is right, I think we can all agree that it is wrong to treat your fellow human beings as if they were cattle being rounded up for slaughter. This analogy is very close to what Sheriff Joe Arpaio of the Maricopa County has been doing to Hispanics.
Two brave men, named Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, discovered that Sheriff Joe Arpaio was systematically spreading his racial beliefs throughout the police force. He accomplished this by letting go any police officer who was unwilling to target Hispanics and Latinos specifically. He then replaced those officers with convicted racists. He offered them rewards for bringing in illegal immigrants.
This, of course, led to the Maricopa County Police Department focusing on those they thought might be illegal immigrants while letting go of other people who were committing true crimes. What is even more heartbreaking is that Sheriff Arpaio, viewing Hispanics as a lower form of human, left his jail cells in such substandard health conditions that Hispanics died because they were placed in them.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin could not let these evils be committed without making them public. Using their media power, they tapped into the Phoenix New Times and also their station, The Village Voice media, and let the world know what this evil Sheriff had done.
Unfortunately, Sheriff Arpaio retaliated by obtaining an illegal warrant and bursting into the homes of these two men in the cover of darkness. When they refused to hand over the evidence, he locked them into the Hispanic jail cells so that they would die.
However, the national media heard the story and made it public. The pressure was so intense upon Sheriff Arpaio and the Maricopa County Police Department that he had to release these two brave Americans.
This illegal detention would result in a lawsuit against the Maricopa County where Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin would win nearly 4 million dollars. This money would go to good use and was start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera fund.
